Emergency Dentist FAQ

What is an emergency dentist?

An emergency dentist is someone who treats dental and mouth injuries requiring immediate attention. Broken or knocked-out teeth are the most common dental emergencies. If you’re able to get to Universal Dental Care within 30 minutes of your injury, you have the best chance of saving your tooth and preventing major problems.

What is a dental emergency?

A tooth being broken or knocked out are the most obvious emergencies, but there are actually many situations which count as a dental emergency.

  • Extreme toothache
  • Bleeding from the soft tissues of the mouth — the gums, cheeks, tongue
  • Trauma to the face or mouth
  • Sudden swelling in your tongue, gums or mouth
  • A tear or deep cut in your lips or inside of your cheek

A chipped tooth may not be a dental emergency, but it’s still best to visit a dentist as soon as possible. You can find an emergency dentist in Auburn WA at Universal Dental Care.

What do I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

It’s actually possible to save a tooth that’s knocked out if you work quickly.

Do not hold a tooth by the root; always hold it by the crown. Try to rinse it off as best you can. There are two options for keeping the tooth safe until you get to the dentist:

  • Try to place it back in the socket, or at least, keep it in your mouth between your gum and cheek. If you can place it back in the socket, gently bite down on some gauze to keep it in place.
  • If you can’t put it in the socket or don’t want to put it in your mouth, you can store the loose tooth in milk. This will keep the root hydrated and free of bacteria until you can get to the dentist.

In either case, contact a dentist — or get someone else who can explain the situation to do so — immediately. The sooner you get to a dentist, the better your chance of saving the tooth.
